Is Change Always Welcome?
After a Windows update in December 2024 (KB5048652), I noticed the favorite folders icons in Microsoft Edge were now monoline, where previously the default yellow folder icons. While searching for a way to revert the icons, I read a discussion on Reddit where one user slighted how developers cannot have consistent design, because people instantly say, “bring back the old design”.
While I understand their point, folder icons across Windows are generally always yellow. So, I think that’s why many users immediately looked for a way to revert this change… Including myself!

The Good News, Reverting the Icon Color is Quick
Step 1
Press the Windows key ❖ and type “msedge.exe” into the search, then right-click and Open file location.

Step 2
Right-click the MS-Edge shortcut and select Properties.

Step 3
In the Shortcut tab, find and modify Target field by adding –disable-features=msFavoritesMonolineFolder after the closing quotation mark. Keep the format as shown below, paying attention to the quotation marks and make sure they stay included.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable-features=msFavoritesMonolineFolder

Step 4
Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.
Step 5
Press the Windows key ❖ again and type “Task”, to find and open the Task Manager. Under the Processes tab, location Microsoft Edge and click End Task. Then relaunch Microsoft Edge and enjoy those beautiful yellow folder icons again!

The One Caveat of This Solution
The only drawback, this process needs to be repeated after additional Windows updates. For instance, since 1/6/2025 I’ve needed to fix this 3 times. The most recent instance being 2/24/25.
